T&T's Ahye 4th in Hungary 100m sprint

25/08/2021

Michelle-Lee Ahye, in her first meet following her participation at the virus-delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, placed fourth in the women’s 100 metres at the Lantos Mihaly Sportkozpont in Hungary on Tuesday.

The T&T sprinter clocked 11.16 seconds to follow to the line, Jamaican Natasha Morrison (11.00), Great Britain’s Daryll Neita (11.07), and English Gardner of the USA (11.09), in the faster of the two timed finals at the World Athletics Continental Tour – Bronze meet held in the city of Budapest.

At the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics, Ahye just missed out on reaching the final in the 100m dash although having the eighth fastest time of the semifinals. She lined up in the second semifinal heat and clocked a season’s best time of 11.00 seconds to place third.

Only the top two runners advance as automatic qualifiers from each of the three semifinal heats which meant that Ahye could have progressed as a non-automatic qualifier. However, Neita, who clocked the same time of 11.00 as Ahye, to place fourth in semifinal heat three, got the nod to compete in the medal race as her exact time across the line was 10.992 while Ahye crossed in 10.993.

However, yesterday, Ahye did not leave the Hungary meeting empty-handed, she ran the anchor leg for an international team, Budapest World, in the women’s 4x100m relay and placed first in a time of 43.26 seconds. She partnered with Morrison, Taliyah Brooks and Nnenya Hailey Cara to beat the Budapest USA Stars of TeJyrica Robinson, Gabriele Cunningham, Gardner, and Dezerea Bryant into second with 44.63 seconds. Finishing in third place was Hungary A team of Bettina Keri, Justina Csoti, Buttercup Weaver and Luca Cossack with 45.29.
