Ayla Stanisclaus crowned herself women’s 200 metres champion at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia, USA, last Saturday.
Stanisclaus stopped the clock at an indoor best 23.52 seconds to secure gold for New Mexico Junior College. In the qualifying round, she produced a 23.85 run, while Pratt Community College’s Kadesha Prescott clocked 24.74 for 15th spot.
Prescott climbed the podium in the 60m dash, bagging bronze in 7.48 seconds. Stanisclaus was forced to settle for fourth spot, also in 7.48. Stanisclaus got to the line in 7.43 in her qualifying heat, while Prescott clocked 7.47. Another Trinidad and Tobago sprinter, Western Texas College sophomore Shikyla Walcott was 29th overall in 7.81.
Jerod Elcock and Judah Taylor were golden for Butler Community College in the men’s 4x400m relay. Butler returned a time of three minutes, 11.90 seconds. Che Lara was part of the Pratt team that finished 17th in 3:19.67.
Lara finished sixth in the 400m finals in 47.73 seconds, while Taylor was ninth in 48.11. Aquila St Louis crossed the line seventh in the women’s 60m hurdles final in 8.83 seconds. The Barton Community College sophomore clocked 8.73 in the preliminary round.
Jalen Purcell was 13th fastest in the men’s 60m heats in 6.78 seconds. His New Mexico Junior College teammate, Tyrell Edwards was disqualified for a false start. Purcell was also 13th in the 200 in 21.48. Elcock was 23rd in 21.86.
Zinara Lesley produced a 1:41.28 run for 13th spot in the women’s 600m. The Cowley College freshman helped her school to fourth spot in the distance medley relay in 12:27.25. And in the women’s 4x400m relay, Prescott and Aaliyah Mitchell were part of the Pratt team that finished ninth in 3:57.14.
Stanisclaus was a key contributor to New Mexico’s victory in the women’s team competition. New Mexico accumulated 160 points. St Louis’ Barton finished fourth with 95. Lesley’s Cowley earned 10th spot with 19. And Prescott and Mitchell’s Pratt secured six points to finish 18th.
Purcell and Edwards’ New Mexico claimed fourth spot in the men’s team competition with 72 points. Taylor and Elcock’s Butler finished 10th with 28, while Lara’s Pratt claimed 17th spot with 12. Iowa Central Community College earned 118 points to capture the men’s title.
