Shelbourne meets Carifta standard in 2 more events at NAAA trials

Keneis Shelbourne excelled over the weekend at the Carifta Games Trials, meeting the standard in all three events she competed in at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago.

The Oasics Athletics, closed the two-day meet hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT), Sunday, with success in the girls U-20 high jump and 400m hurdles, to add to her achievement on Saturday in winning the triple jump (11.77m) with a qualifying mark of 12.42.

In the morning session on day two, Shelbourne cleared the bar with 1.75m to achieve the 1.64m standard in the high jump and beat one other competitor in Dextra Harris of Zenith (1.61m).

Later in the 400m hurdles, Shelbourne won with a time of one munite and 02.17 seconds to go under the qualifying time of 1:04.69 for the Games, set to take place in Nassau, Bahamas over the Easter weekend (April 7 -10), finishing ahead of Rasheeda Cave (Rss Phoenix) with 1:04.87 and Kevah Scott (Zenith) with 1:05.66.

Alexxe Henry of Zenith completed the sprint double in the girls’ Under-17 and also went under the qualifying time in both events.

The sprinter clocked 24.43 to meet the 24.70-standard in the 200m, winning ahead of Simplex’s Kaziah Peters with 25.01 and Zenith clubmate Makayla Cupid with 25.64.

On day one, she sprinted to victory in the 100m in a time of 11.77 (12.04-standard).

Shelbourne and Henry were among the 1o athletes on day two meeting the standard for next month’s Games.

Others included the top two finishers in the girls heptathlon open. Winner Gianna Paul and second-place finisher Tenique Vincent, both of Concorde, went past the qualifying total of 4,121 points, earning 4,479 and 4,171, respectively.

Kevisjah Figaro (Fullfillingathl) was a far-off third with 1,980. Vincent cleared 1.61m in the girls’ hepthalon’s high jump (1.57m).

During the seven-discipline contest, Paul also twice achieved the standard (5.55m) for the girls U-20 long jump, with 5.59m in the first round and in the third and final round with 5.72m.

Others achieving the standards in their respective events were, among the U-20 girls, sprinter Janae De Gannes (Concorde) in the 200m (24.66) with a 24.34-clocking, and field specialist Lalenii Grant (MERC) in the discus (39.57m) with 44.01m.

For the boys in the age-group, were middle-distance runner Tafari Waldron of Cougars in the 5,000m (17:12.00) with 16:23.00 and two sprinters in the 200m (21.74) Revell Webster (Concorde) and eventual gold medallist Joshua Mascall (Fyzabad).

Webster achieved the qualifying time in semifinal heat two with 21.69. He opted out the final, which was won by Mascall with 21.71. Waldron also among qualfiers on day one in the boys’ 1,500m.

In the U-17 category were Kaizen Panthers’ jumpers Chloe James among the girls and Kaleb Campbell, for the boys.

James topped the long jump (5.44m-standard) with 5.50m and Campbell, the high jump (1.82m-standard) with 1.83m.
