Nicholas Romany and Samantha Shukla sped to victory in the 10K in the sixth annual Guardian Group Shine Charity Walk and Run at the Nelson Mandela Park, St Clair, Port-of-Spain, Saturday.
Romany was the overall winner, completing the race in a time of 34 minutes and 0.23 seconds. Kelvin Johnson and Elvis Turner secured second and third position, finishing the race in 35.33 and 36.23, respectively.
In the women’s category, Shukla pace was just too fast for her rivals to catch up, clinching the title with a 42.16-clocking, comfortably ahead of second-placed Shardie Mahabir (44.57) and third-placed Zara Suite-Stewart (46.03).
In the 5K, it was Phillip James crossing first to take the overall title. He completed the race in 16.06. Tafari Waldron got closest to catching him, clocking 16.20 to take second while Donnel Francis completed the race in 16.28 as third-place finisher. Omare Thompson (16.37) and Antonio Arena (18.55) filled the remaining top two spots.
On the women’s side, Aniqah Bailey finished the 5K in 19.59 to be the clear winner. April Francis got closest to catching her, clocking 22.36 to take second. Chennai Moore (22.43), Moira Lindsay (23.25) and Rori Gittens (25.45), rounded out the top-five.
Some 2,675 athletes participated in charity event.
