Rogers cops 400 metres silver medal

Quartermiler Joanna Rogers led performances of T&T athletes on Saturday, representing the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) at the JD Martin meet at the Mosier Indoor Track in Norman, Oklahoma in the United States.

The freshman copped a silver medal in the women’s 400 metres with a time of 58.84 seconds and later partnered with another T&T athlete senior Safiya John to nab gold in the women’s 4x400m with 4:06.70.

John also picked up a bronze medal in the high jump with a leap of 1.68m. She lined up in one more event, the 60m hurdles, but did not finish.

Che Rochford, another UAPB freshman, had a packed schedule competing in five events. He had podium success in the men’s 4x400m relay handing off the baton to compatriot junior Franklyn Stanislaus to help UAPB ‘A’ team bag a bronze medal with a time of 3:26.85.

In his other event on the track, Rochford placed ninth in the 60m hurdles (8.91) preliminaries and did not advance to the next round. Over on the field, he placed eighth (12.61m) in the shot put, 13th (5.82m) in the long jump and did not register a mark in the high jump.

He competed against Stanislaus in several of those events. Stanislaus reached the final of the men’s 60m hurdles after advancing with a time of 8.62 from the preliminary round. He placed sixth in the medal race with an 8.45-clocking.

Stanislaus was an eighth-place finisher in the long jump with 6.24m and in the shot put he was 11th with 10.75m.

UAPB freshman Genesis Joseph just missed out on a top-three finish in the men’s 800m, placing fourth in the timed final with 1:58.27. He was also part of the UAPB 4x400m ‘B’ team who placed fourth (3:28.02).

At the Dr MLK Jr Collegiate Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Centre in New Mexico, sprinter Jalen Purcell won bronze in the men’s 60m final also on Saturday.

The West Texas A&M sophomore clocked 6.77 to take third place after progressing with the sixth-fastest time out of the preliminaries earlier. He placed second in heat one of five with 6.78.

At Samford Open at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex in Alabama, Jackson State sophomore Adell Coltrust reached the final of the men’s 60m but was disqualified after a false-start. He clocked 6.85, crossing third in semifinal heat one of three. This after moving on from the preliminary round with the sixth-fastest time (6.91) again, winning the ninth heat of 11.

At the Larry Wieczorek Invitational at the Recreation Building in Iowa City, Northern Iowa sophomore Onal Mitchell placed 10th in the men’s 200m timed final with 22.80 and he later ran the 4x400m relay and his Northern Iowa quartet finished seventh with 3:17.84.

Iowa sophomore Ianna Roach also compete at the meet and she placed eighth in the women’s shot put with a best throw measuring 14.20m.

At the Michigan Invitational Indoor Track Centre in Ann Arbor, Alisha St Louis competed in the women’s triple jump. The Eastern Michigan senior ended in 10th spot with 11.04m.

University of Alabama sophomore Ayla Stanislaus lined up in the women’s 60m at the Samford Invite at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex on Friday and finished third in heat three and ninth overall with a time of 7.69 and did not advance to the final.
