Edwin Roberts beamed with pride as he delivered a motivational speech yesterday at his alma mater, Rosary Boys RC Primary.

Students of the Port of Spain school listened attentively as Roberts encouraged them to live productive lives. Afterwards, the 1964 double Olympic medallist presented his Trinidad and Tobago team blazer from the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia to Rosary.

Accepting on behalf of the school was the head prefect, Memphis Pioneers athlete Elijah Gibbs-Clarke.

Roberts also signed autographs for the students as well as the visitors’ book in principal Richard Gomez’s office.

“It was a very good experience,” Roberts told the Express, “to come back to the place where you started.”

Roberts, who lives in Pennsylvania, USA, also visited his other alma mater, Tranquillity Government Secondary. He was joined at “Tranquil” by another former athlete, Rommel Blackmann. Roberts and Blackmann reminisced about a half-mile race at the school’s annual Sports Day in which Blackmann came out on top.

“I got blocked,” Roberts said jokingly.

Roberts presented Tranquillity’s principal, Dr Sean Annisette with his T&T team blazer from the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Roberts bagged men’s 200m bronze at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. T&T earned two other medals at the Tokyo Games. Edwin Skinner, Kent Bernard, Roberts and Wendell Mottley claimed bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay, while Mottley seized silver in the 400m event.
