Multi-sport athletes aim to shine at NACAC Trials

Concorde Athletic Club’s twin brother and sister Tyrique and Tenique Vincent, Michal Paul, Zenith’s Malique Young and Tehillah Francois of the Mason Hall Police Youth Club (PYC) will be seeking to continue their dominating form at the Trials for theÊupcoming North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Age Group Under-13 and U-15 Championships, this weekend.

The two-day meet starts Saturday at 10 am at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago and Francois enters with wins in the girls’ outdoor pentathlon 11-12 category at both preparations meets hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAAT), first at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on the weekend of October 16 and at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago, a week later, leading up to the Trials.

The Mason Hall Police Youth Club pentathlete tallied 2,272 points in the first meet and improved at home, winning with 2,458 points in the five-discipline event – 60-metre dash, 800m/1,000m (girls/boys), long jump, high jump and baseball throw. In the Tobago meet, second was Zenith’s Toniyah Boucher with 2,035 and Denesia Fletcher of Zenith was third (1,904).

Francois, Boucher and Fletcher will renew their rivalry as they attempt to gain selection on the national team for the NACAC Age Group Championships to unfold at theÊAthletics Stadium in the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports, Plaza Espana in Managua, Nicaragua from December 17-18.

Paul and Young, winners at the respective prep meet in the boys’ version of the event, will aim to improve on their points. Paul won with 2,863 at the opening prep meet while Young commanded the second meet with a 2,673-tally.

The Vincent brother and sister twin will chase wins in their respective categories in the U-15 heptathlon, attempting to tally as many points possible from seven events including 80m, 1,000/1,200m (girls/boys), 60/80m hurdles (girls/boys), long jump, high jump, baseball throw and shot put. In the first meet, Tyrique won with 4,323 and Tenique topped her group with 3,814. Ê

In Tobago, the following week, it was Jayden Phillips (Mason Hall PYC), winning the boys’ competition with 3,966 points while Kaori Robley of Mercury Athletic Club sealed the top spot with 3,407 points.Ê Ê

Both Phillips and Robley will seek to continue their successful run at the familiar surroundings to get a chance to challenge athletes from some 34 nations including host Nicaragua, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, Turks and Caicos, US Virgin Islands, USA, Curacao, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St Maarten.

The Multi-sport athletes return for day two, Sunday, which also starts at 10 am.
