Guy, Lewis golden in Texas

T&T hurdler Justin Guy and field athlete Camille Lewis had personal best (pb) performances to nab gold in their respective events at the third South Plains College Indoor Invite in Levelland, Texas in the United States on Tuesday.

Guy, a freshman at South Plains College, got across the line first with pb of 7.94 seconds to comfortably win the men’s 60 metres hurdles ahead of Western Texas College freshman Daylin Williams (8.01) and schoolmate sophomore Chris Robinson (8.15), respectively.

South Plains’ freshman Lewis, who competed in two events, topped the women’s high jump with a 1.64m-leap to beat schoolmates Jonair Thomas and Ari Villafranco, who both tied for second with a 1.61-leap.

This after, Lewis copped a silver medal in the women’s 600m with a 1:38.33-clocking. She followed fellow South Plain freshman Cemore Donald (1:36.74) to the line while another freshman Shadee Finley of Western Texas was a far-off third in 1:40.91.

Both Guy and Lewis also represented “The Texans” as the college is fondly called, at the second instalment of the South Plains College Indoor Invite on Sunday at the same venue.

Guy raced into events – the 60m hurdles and 60m dash – and had success in the former. He hurdled to third place with 8.20 seconds in the final behind Robinson (8.12) and Williams (8.14). Earlier, Lewis ran a pb of 7.34 to place second in section one of the 60m timed finals and was 10th overall.

Lewis bagged a bronze in the women’s 800m with another pb (2:20.49) and just missed out on a podium-finish in the 1,000m. She finished fourth with a 3:22.37-clocking.

On Saturday, at the Kentucky Collegiate Indoor Invitational in, Louisville, Iantha Wright of Life University placed second in the women’s 60m. The freshman clocked 7.81 seconds in the final after progressing from the preliminaries with the fifth-fastest time of 7.76, placing second in heat three.

At the Big Ten Open in Bloomington, Indiana, Naomi Campbell of Purdue was the runner-up in the women’s 200m final with a 25.54-clocking. She also raced in the 60m dash and finished fifth with 7.80.

Also on Saturday at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Championships in Warrenburg, Missouri, Justen O’Brien of Iowa Western Community College raced in two events.

The sophomore placed second in section three of the men’s 400m timed finals with 51.71 to place seventh overall and later helped his Iowa Western CC team to third place overall in the men’s 4x400m relay with a 3:24.03. O’Brien ran the second leg to see his team cross third in section two of the timed final.

On Friday, Jenea Spinks of California and Tamia Badal won a bronze in their respective events at the Air Force Collegiate Open in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Spinks, a sophomore at the University of California crossed the line in 7.45 to place third in the women’s 60m. This after she advanced with the third-fastest time in the preliminaries, winning heat two with 7.59.

Badal, who is also a second-year student at the University of Colorado, took third spot in the 60m hurdles final with a 8.57-timing. In the preliminaries, she placed second in the opening heat with 8.74, the third-fastest time of the eight finalists.
