Dream Jereem wins 200m Texas Tech Shootout

Jereem “The Dream” Richards was impressive at the Texas Tech Shootout, in the United States, last Friday, claiming gold in the men’s 200 metres event in 20.71 seconds.

The Trinidad and Tobago track star forced American sprinter Jacolby Shelton to settle for silver in 20.77. Two other T&T athletes, New Mexico Junior College freshmen Aaron Brewster and Onil Mitchell were 38th and 65th, respectively, in 22.10 and 22.89.

Thanks to his 20.71 run, Richards is in seventh spot on the 2020 world indoor performance list. American Terrance Laird is the global leader at 20.43.

Richards also produced a fine run in the Texas Tech Shootout 400, finishing fourth in 46.55 seconds. University of Alabama junior Jacob St Clair was 10th overall in 47.48.New Mexico Junior sprinter Ayla Stanisclaus secured fourth spot in the women’s 60m dash in 7.40 seconds. University of Iowa student Ianna Roach threw 13.99 metres to finish 11th in the women’s shot put.

New Mexico Junior’s Tyrell Edwards was 11th fastest in the men’s 60m dash in 6.81 seconds. In the opening round, Alabama freshman Timothy Frederick was 28th in 7.10, and did not progress. New Mexico Junior’s Onil Mitchell clocked 7.11 for 30th spot.

Texas Christian University (TCU) student Tatianna Martinez finished 23rd overall in the women’s 400m in 56.25 seconds. Western Texas College sophomore Shikyla Walcott was 26th in the opening round of the women’s 60m in 7.95, and did not advance. And Walcott was 63rd in the 200 in 26.08.

At the Tiger Paw Invitational, in South Carolina, Tyra Gittens bagged women’s long jump bronze with a big 6.42m leap. The Texas A&M University junior finished 42nd overall in the 60m hurdles in 8.64 seconds.

In Arkansas, Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter Akanni Hislop captured Tyson Invitational men’s 60m bronze in 6.68 seconds. University of Minnesota student Kion Benjamin was 21st in 6.89. In the opening round of qualifying, Benjamin had clocked 6.87.

Hislop produced an indoor best in the men’s 200m, clocking 20.82 seconds to finish fourth overall. Benjamin was 19th in another 200m event in 21.89. University of Arkansas at Pinebluff athlete Clement Campbell disturbed the sand at 7.37m for fourth spot in the men’s long jump.

Pine Bluff’s Safiya John was 16th fastest in the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.49 seconds. University of Colorado’s Tamia Badal finished 30th in the opening round of the event in 8.93. John produced a 5.63m leap for 23rd spot in the long jump. And Badal was 45th in the 200 in 25.82.

In Tennessee, Cherisse Murray finished fifth in the Vanderbilt’s Music City Challenge women’s shot put. The Alabama junior threw the iron ball 15.37m.

At the University of Central Oklahoma Alumni Classic, Oklahoma City University sprinter Ian Thomas got to the line in 6.92 seconds to finish fourth in section one and fifth overall in the men’s 60m dash.

In Kansas, Jerod Elcock was seventh in the Gorilla Classic men’s 200m. The Butler Community College student got to the line in 21.74 seconds. Elcock clocked 6.89 for 13th spot in the 60m dash. Thomas had produced a 6.94 run in the previous round. He progressed, but did not face the starter for an opportunity to get to the final.

Franklyn Stanislaus finished 16th in the men’s high jump with a 1.84m clearance and 17th in 60m hurdles qualifying in 8.63 seconds. The top 16 in the hurdles advanced. His Pine Buff teammate, Je-Risa James was 21st in the women’s 400m in 58.09 seconds. Another Pine Bluff athlete, Caitlin Ragoonanan was 21st in the women’s triple jump at 11.24m.

At the ISTAF indoor meet in Berlin, Germany, T&T sprinter Keston Bledman got home in 6.86 seconds to finish sixth in his men’s 60m heat and 12th overall. The top six progressed to the final, which was won by Turkey’s Emre Zafer Barnes in 6.60.
