Janae De Gannes performed beyond her years on day two of the Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday, bettering the girls’ under-17 long jump standard four times.

Just 13, De Gannes produced a big 5.68 metres leap for a runaway victory. In fact, she twice hit the 5.68 mark – in rounds four and six. The Concorde athlete had two other jumps beyond the 5.50m Carifta standard, disturbing the sand at 5.60 and 5.59.

Devin Augustine was dominant in the boys’ under-20 200m semis, the Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ) sprinter winning heat one in a wind-assisted 20.98 seconds. Runner-up in the opening heat, Dominic Cole also dived under the 21.49 Carifta standard, the Abilene Wildcats athlete getting to the line in 21.45.

Augustine did not face the starter in the final, while Cole finished fifth in 22.39 seconds. Top spot went to Chazz Alexander of Simplex in 21.57.

A wind-aided 7.28m leap earned Kelsey Daniel top spot in the boys’ under-20 long jump. The Kaizen Panthers athlete’s winning jump was two centimetres better than the 7.26 Carifta qualifying distance.

Jaidi James of Tobago Falcons and Neon Wolves athlete Aaron Antoine cleared the bar at the 1.90m boys’ under-20 high jump standard. James won the event on countback.

Lalenii Grant produced a 36.58m Carifta qualifying effort to top the girls’ under-17 discus, while her Mercury teammate Jeron James also achieved a standard, throwing 49.50m to win the boys’ under-17 discus.

Four athletes bettered the 46.00m boys’ under-17 javelin standard. PFNJ’s Dorian Charles topped the field with a 55.16m effort. Toco TAFAC’s Chavez Meloney, Le Bron James of Tobago Falcons and Toco Titans’ Jaden Kirton finished second, third and fourth, respectively, throwing 51.24, 48.65 and 48.42.

Antonia Sealy accumulated 4,768 points to triumph in the girls’ open heptathlon. The Fulfilling Athletic Dreams athlete’s total was more than 500 points better than the 4,200 Carifta standard. In the boys’ open octathlon, the top two bettered the 5,100 qualifying score. D’Abadie Progressive’s Joel Andrews claimed top spot with 5,251 points, with silver going to PFNJ’s Anthony Diaz at 5,112.
