T&T’s Kelsey Daniel won the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships men’s triple jump gold medal on the opening day of the three-day meet in Hobbs, New Mexico, USA on Thursday.
The New Mexico Junior College (JC) student leaped to 16.09 metres on his first and only attempt to finish ahead of Roman Kuleshov of Iowa Central Community College (CC) with 15.57m and Godwin Charles (Central Arizona) with 15.45m.
With the victory, Daniel of local club Kaizen Panthers added the NJCAA outdoor crown to the indoor gold he won in the event in March. The 2021 Pan American Under-23 Games silver medallist also won bronze in the long jump (7.78).
Antonia Sealy (Iowa Western CC), Shakira Kirk (Central Arizona), Christopher Crawford (Barton County CC) and Anson Moses (Cloud County CC), all won silver medals.
Sealy was second in the women’s heptathlon with new personal best (pb) tally of 5,221 points. The 2019 Carifta Games double medallist won the title last year. She was also fourth in the javelin (39.11) and sixth in the long jump (5.89).
Kirk landed silver in the women’s discus (47.42m) and was eight in the shot put (12.82).
Crawford clinched in the men’s shot put with a personal best effort of 18.40m. The Pentecostal Light and Life Foundation past student was also sixth in the discus (58.31) and ninth in the hammer (50.07pb). Moses was runner-up in the men’s decathlon with a personal best score of 6,666 points.
Che Saunders of New Mexico JC was seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles final with a 14.42-clocking. South Plains’ Justin Guy did not finish (DNF) the medal race.
At the end of the meet on Saturday, New Mexico JC and South Plains were the joint men’s winners with 100 points. Barton County was third, with Cloud County in fifth.
In the women’s division, Iowa Central was fifth with Central Arizona in 10th.
