Devin Augustine and Shaniqua Bascombe will lead the charge for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2020 Carifta Games, in Bermuda. The talented teens have been named in a 50-member squad for the April 10-13 regional junior championships.
Augustine is the reigning Carifta Games boys’ under-17 100 metres champion , while Bascombe was the winner of last year’s girls’ under-17 200. Both sprinters are now in the higher age-group, and would be keen to prove their worth against older rivals. Augustine will run in the boys’ under-20 100m, 200m and 4x100m events, while Bascombe is listed for the same races in the girls’ under-20 category.
Safiya John will defend her girls’ open heptathlon title in Bermuda. John was not home for last weekend’s Carifta trials, but has been performing well for University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, in the United States, and was named on the T&T team for the Easter weekend meet. She will also compete in the long jump.
Rae-Ann Serville will do battle for T&T in the girls’ under-20 400m event, as well as the 4×4 relay. Thirteen-year-old Janae De Gannes is among ten athletes selected to represent the country in the girls’ under-17 category. She will be on show in the long jump and 4x100m relay.
Kelsey Daniel will fly the Red, White and Black in the boys’ under-20 long jump and triple jump. Christopher Crawford and Jayden Scott have both been selected for the shot put and discus events in the same category.
Naeem Nelson will compete in the boys’ under-17 100m, and will be a key member of the 4×1 team.
