Ahye, Richards start World Indoor medal quest

The 29-year-old Ahye who turns 30 on April 10 will line up in heat two of six from lane six against Portugal’s Rosalina Santos, Egypt’s Bassant Hemida, Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji, Spain’s Maria Isabel Perez, Guyana’s Jasmine Abrams, Denmark’s Ida Karstoft and Philippines’ Kristina Marie Knott.

Jamaicans, Shericka Jackson, and Briana Williams, the latter of whom are coached by former T&T Olympic medal winner, Ato Boldon will compete in heats five and six respectively.

The duo of Poland’s Ewa Swoboda (6.99 seconds), and USA’s Marybeth Sant-Price (7.04) who runs out of heat one and four respectively have the fastest times so far this season.

The women’s 60m semifinal and final are also carded for Friday.

Also in action on the opening day’s programme will be Jereem Richards in heat two of five of the men’s 400m from lane five against Andorra’s Pau Blasi, South African Zakhiti Nene. Spain’s Manuel Guijarro, and Mikhail Litvin of Kazakhstan.

Richards has run a season-best time of 45.83 seconds to enter the event ranked tenth in the world.

The deceased Deon Lendore, 29, qualified for the 2022 championships but died in a vehicular accident on January 10 in Texas, USA.

Lendore won both individual and relay medals at previous editions of the indoor championships. Richards, who was Lendore’s men’s 4x400m team-mate, was a pallbearer at Lendore’s funeral.

On Saturday, Ruebin Walters will compete in the men’s 60m hurdles and Jerod Elcock in the men’s 60m sprint event.

Dexter Voisin is serving as both the coach and manager of the T&T team with former world 400m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon as hurdles coach and Nicole Fuentes, the massage therapist.

The team touchdown in Serbia on Wednesday, has been accompanied by Dexter Voisin (Team Managercoach), Jehue Gordon and Nicole Fuentes whose will serve in the roles of hurdles coach and massage therapist, respectively.
