A member of the T&T team at the last Under-20 World Championships in Kenya last June, Mc Kay of Abilene Wildcats won the half-laps event in 21.38 seconds, just under the 21.40 World qualification standard, and well under the Pan Am Junior Championship (21.62) and Carifta (21.92) marks.
Joining Mc Kay on the Carifta team as well was Memphis Pioneers’ Keone John who ended second in 21.79, and third-placed finisher, Jaden De Souza of Phoenix Athletics, who crossed the line in 21.92
Earlier in the morning session, John (21.59) won heat one in a Pan Am Junior qualifying time ahead of FAS’s Joshua Mascall who clocked 21.80, a Carifta mark as well while Webster won heat three in a Pan Am Junior time of 21.51, and Mc Kay topped heat four in 21.90.
And in the semis, Mc Kay also went under the Worlds qualification time in clocking 21.12 while John’s 21.61 was faster than the Pan Am Junior Championship standard along with Cougars’ Jordan Noel who crossed the line in the Carifta mark of 21.92 while in semifinal two, Mascall’s (21.68) and De Souza (21.69) both bettered the Carifta mark as well.
In the Boys, Under-17 200m final, Wildcats’ Daeshaun Cole won in 22.30 secs, a qualifier for the Carifta Games team along with Cougars Kaiyin Morris, who clocked 22.40 to dip under the 22.44 mark, while Kyle Williams of Burnley ended third in 22.46.
Williams had earlier in the preliminary heats raced to a Carifta mark in 22.31 to win the first heat while Cole (22.33) won heat four, ahead of fellow Carifta qualifier Dylan Woodruffe of Cougars who crossed the line in 22.34.
In the semi-final, Cole (22.22), Woodruffe (22.23), Kaiyin Morris (22.38) and Williams (22.35) all achieved Carifta marks as well.
In the Girls Under-17 800m, Aniqah Bailey of One A Week club topped the field in two minutes, 21.27 seconds to better the Carifta mar of 2:24.84 along with Cougars Kayleigh Forde (2:24.05 mins) who also earned a ticket to Jamaica, while RSS Phoenix’s Rasheeda Cave ended third in 2:32.50.
Concorde’s Janae De Gannes was the lone qualifier in the Girls Under-17 Long Jump with a distance of 5.66 metres, well clear of the 5.34m qualifying standard while her clubmate Nathaniela King (5.08 m) was second and Memphis Pioneers’ Hailey Lynch, third, with a distance of 4.92 m.
De Gannes also qualified to the Carifta team as the winner of the morning Girls Under-17 200m heats in 24.50 seconds, well under the qualifying standard of 24.68.
Neon Wolves Aaron Antoine achieved a qualifying mark for both the Carifta Games and Pan Am Junior Championship (2.00 metres) in the Boys Under-20 High Jump with a height of 2.10m.
While in the Girls Under-17 Discus Throw (1kg), D’Abadie’s Adrianna Quamina won with a distance of 33.70m, which bettered the Carifta mark of 33.15m.
The 49th Carifta Games will take palce in Kingston, Jamaica from April 16-19.
