Competing in the women’s 60m heats the 29-year-old Ahye who turns 30 on April 10
was second in heat two of six in 7.23 seconds for the 17th best time overall to trail Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji who won in 7.17, while Spain’s Maria Isabel Perez was the third automatic qualifier in 7.23 as well.
Denmark’s Ida Karstoft earned a semis spot as one of the fastest losers in 7.29 for the fourth spot in the heat.
The top T&T women’s sprinter will face the starter in the third and final semifinal on Friday from 1.10 pm (TT time) from lane four against Gambia’s Gina Bass, Brazil’s Vitoria Cristina Rosa, Jamaica’s Briana Williams, Great Britain’s Daryll Neita, Switzerland’s Geraldine Frey, Spain’s Perez and Claudia Payton of Sweden. The final in the women’s event is scheduled for 3.52 pm.
World 200m bronze medalist and 4x400m relay champion, Jereem Richards won heat two of five of the men’s 400m from lane five in 46.49 seconds and was joined as an automatic qualifier for the semifinals by Mikhail Litvin of Kazakhstan who finished the one-lap event in 46.72.
Richards has a season-best time of 45.83 seconds and entered the event ranked tenth in the world.
In the semifinals carded for 1.35 pm (TT time) on Friday, Point Fortin-born Richards will once again line up against Litvin, Poland’s Kajetan Duszynski, Denmark’s Benjamin Lobo Vedel, USA’s Marqueze Washington, and Belgium’s Julien Watrin.
And in the other semifinal, Jamaican Christopher Taylor goes against Spain’s Bruno Hortelano-Roig, Serbia’s Bosko Kijanovic, USA’s Trevor Bassitt, Czech Republic’s Patrik Sorm, and Sweden’s Carl Bengtstrom. The mens’ 400m final will take place on Saturday from 3.15 pm (TT time).
The deceased Deon Lendore, 29, qualified for the 2022 championships but died in a vehicular accident on January 10 in Texas, USA.
Lendore won both individual and relay medals at previous editions of the indoor championships. Richards, who was Lendore’s men’s 4x400m team-mate, was a pallbearer at Lendore’s funeral.
On Saturday, Jerod Elcock lines up in the men’s 60m sprint in heat five of six against Puerto Rico’s Miles Lewis, Austria’s Markus Fuchs, Hondura’s Melique Garcia, Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs, the Olympic 100m champion, Imranur Rahman of Bangladesh, and Maldives Hassan Saaid.
And on Sunday, Ruebin Walters will compete in the first of six men’s 60m hurdles heats alongside Brazil’s Gabriel Constantino, Great Britain’s David King, Cyprus’ Milan Trajkovic, Serbia’s Luka Trgovcevic, Holland’s Liam Van der Schaaf, and USA’s Jarret Eaton.
Dexter Voisin is serving as both the coach and manager of the T&T team with former world 400m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon as hurdles coach and Nicole Fuentes, the massage therapist.
