Walcott bags bronze in Finland

T&T’s Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott improved on his season’s best (sb) yesterday and bagged a bronze medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

The two-time Olympic medallist threw 86.09 metres (sb) to finish third behind Kirt Magnus of Estonia, who won with an 88.32m-throw and second-place finisher Germany’s Thomas Rohler with 86.33, respectively.

Walcott opened with a fouled throw before landing his second attempt, some 79.01m out. He followed up with an 82.21m-throw and then mark which earned him a spot on the podium. He tossed the spear 79.79m on his fifth try and then had a foul on his sixth and final attempt.

Last week, Walcott qualified for this year’s IAAF World Championship (September 28-October 6) in Doha, Qatar after surpassing the qualifying standard of 83m, winning gold with his then sb 84.81m-throw at the Virrat’s 90th anniversary meet in Finland.

This followed up the national record-holder’s gold-medal win with 81.68m in Kuortane, Finland, two weeks ago.
