Deon Lendore, Jereem “The Dream” Richards, Asa Guevara and Machel Cedenio will bid to dethrone men’s 4×400 metres champions United States at the IAAF World Relays here in Yokohama, Japan, today. The Trinidad and Tobago quartet will do battle from 6.37 this morning (TT time), taking on the Americans, Great Britain, Australia, Jamaica, Japan, Belgium and South Africa in the final.
In yesterday’s preliminary round, at the International Stadium Yokohama, T&T topped the third and final heat in three minutes, 02.49 seconds to emerge as the second fastest qualifiers. Only the Americans, winners of heat one in 3:02.06, were faster on the day. Japan clocked 3:02.55 to triumph in heat two.
Lendore ran a solid leadoff leg for T&T, earning his team the lead at the first handoff. Richards was impressive on the second leg, maintaining the cushion. Guevara battled hard, fighting off a South African challenge towards the end of the third leg to ensure anchorman Cedenio started his lap of the track in front.
