Bascombe, Augustine book Bermuda Carifta spots

Reigning Carifta Games champions Shaniqua Bascome (Cougars Track and Field Club) and Devin Augustine (Point Fortin New Jets) booked their tickets to Bermuda on Saturday when they were both were victorious in their 100 metres events at the Carifta Games trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

Bascombe, who struck gold in the 200 metres event last year in the Under-17 division, won the Under-20 Girls’ 100 metres in a time of 11:70 seconds. The time not only qualified her for the Carifta Games but also the Under-20 World Junior Championship in Kenya.

Following Bascombe home in the event was Simplex’s Leah Bertrand, who recorded 11.79 seconds, which qualifies her for Kenya as well. Third home was Naomi Campbell (Point Fortin New Jets) in a time of 11:92 seconds.

Devin Augustine also recorded the same feat as Bascombe when he sped to victory in the Under-20 Boys’ 100 metres in a time of 10:47 seconds, which was way inside the Carifta Games and World Junior time requirement.

Dominic Cole of Abilene Wildcats was second in 10.69 while Point Fortin New Jets’ Jeremy Charles was third in 10.78 seconds.

In the Under-17 Girls’ 100 metres event, Cougars had the first two past the line in Janika Jordan and Reneisha Andrews. The 13-year-old Jordan was clocked in 12.16 second while Andrew clocked 12.20 seconds. Concord’s Janae DeGannes was third in the time of 12.29 seconds.

In the Under 17 Boys 100 metres sprint, Naeem Nelson of Simplex recorded the time of 10.98 seconds to earn his spot on the flight to Bermuda. He got the better of the Cougars duo of Jordan Noel and Jorvan Westfield. Noel recorded the time 11.14 seconds with Westfield secured a clocking of 11.16 seconds.

In the Under-17 Girls’ 400 metres, Natasha Fox (Point Fortin New Jets) won her pet event in 57.58 seconds with Toco Titans’ Xea Bruce second position with her timing of 57.97 seconds.

In the Under-17 Boys’ 400 metres, Nakiel Denoon led a Cougars sweep of the top places when he was first past the line in 50.29 seconds. Cyril Sumner of Memphis Pioneers was second in 50.36 seconds while Michael Jack (Cougars) was third in 50.48 seconds.

Memphis Pioneers’ Rae Ann-Serville ran out an easy winner in the Under-20 Girls’ 400 metres event in 54.55 seconds but was just off the Carifta and World Junior Youth Games standard. Camille Lewis (Fire Fitness) was second in 55.91 seconds while Malicka Coutain (Point Fortin New Jets) was third in 57.60 seconds.

In the Under-20 Boys’ 400 metres event, Point Fortin New Jets’ Jabari Fox gave his followers something to cheer about when he crossed the line in the time of 49.03 seconds. Simplex’s Chazz Alexander was second in 49.07 seconds.

Cougars’ Karessa Kirton was golden in the Under-17 Girls’ 100 metres hurdle event in 14.57 for the trip.

The field events saw many athletes attaining the standards required for both games. From the first event, Mercury’s Jeron James threw the shot putt 15.05 metres to earn the right to travel to Bermuda. Christop Crawford of Tobago Falcons meanwhile threw the discus 50.54 metres to earn a spot Bermuda.
