Camille Lewis was the lone T&T athlete finishing among the medals at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships held over the weekend at the Robert W Plaster Centre in Pittsburg, Kansas in the United States.

The South Plains College freshman copped silver in the women’s 600 metres event, crossing the line in one minute and 34.08 seconds. This after advancing with the third-fastest time of 1:35.98 out of the preliminaries, placing second in heat four.

She was then the runner-up in section two of the timed final to place second overall in her compact schedule of events over the weekend.

Lewis also picked up a gold medal in the 4x800m relay, following an impressive anchor leg which saw her South Plains team win with a time of Ê9:38.71.

She also competed in the distance medley relay (DMR), running the third leg, in which her team placed sixth with 12:58.39.

Lewis also featured on the field in the high jump event and she got to the height of 1.51m but could go no higher and placed 11th.

Another South Plains T&T athlete Justin Guy competed at the Championships meet. He raced in the men’s 60m hurdles and the freshman got into the final with an 8.00-clocking in the preliminary round but had to settle for the sixth spot, going over the line with 8.05.

T&T had four sprinters including New Mexico JC sophomores Jalen Purcell, Tyrell Edwards and Onil Mitchell and Butler CC Redshirt athlete Jerod Elcock and face the starter in the men’s 60m dash but none of them reached the podium.

Purcell and Edwards progressed out of the preliminary round but did not finish among the top three spots. The former was fifth with 6.80 and the other seventh with 6.85. Both clocked faster times in the preliminaries, Purcell’s 6.77 won him heat two, which also saw Edwards race and he placed fifth (6.88) while Edwards’ 6.75 placed him second in heat three ahead of schoolmate Mitchell (6.97), who finished sixth. Overall, Edwards placed 16th and Mitchell 24th.

Edwards and Purcell along with Aaron Brewster, another New Mexico JC sophomore, competed in the 200m but none was able to book a spot in the final. Edwards finished 14th (21.85), Purcell 21st (22.00) and Brewster, 24th (22.92).

Elcock (second leg) and Taylor (anchor leg) teamed up for Butler CC in the men’s 4x400m but their team was good enough for the fifth spot with 3:13.30, to trail Purcell’s New Mexico team in fourth (3:13.15).

New Mexico JC sophomore Ayla Stanisclaus competed in three events but did not win a medal despite reaching the medal round in each. She placed fifth in the women’s 60m final with 7.48, sixth in the 200m with 24.51 and her 4x400m relay team was seventh (3:53.89).
