T&T’s 2008 Olympic men’s 4×100-metre relay team received their long-awaited gold medals at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland earlier on Tuesday. The quintet of Richard ‘Torpedo’ Thompson, Keston Bledman, Emmanuel Callander, Marc Burns and Aaron Armstrong (reserve), along with TT Olympic Committee (TTOC) president Diane Henderson, travelled to Switzerland for the medal presentation. Initially, T&T earned silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, behind Jamaica. However, due to a doping violation, T&T’s Caribbean neighbours were stripped of their gold medals by the IOC, which means T&T is now the official gold medal winner of the event. Before today’s presentation, T&T won Olympic gold medals in 1976 when Hasely Crawford won the 100 metres event in Montreal and Keshorn Walcott javelin gold in London in 2012.
